To share out the benefits of tourism in the local community, Richard took us to another longhouse for breakfast. The students smelled very badly this morning and I don’t think there was a dry boot in the whole group.
On the way to breakfast we passed through the grounds of the local primary school, a nice place with beautiful gardens. The local children have to board here, even if they live within easy walking distance.
By longboat and minibus it took about two and a half hours to Limbang, a small river port not far from Brunei. There is not much to the town apart from a few shops and a market. Across the river from our hotel, which is the only high rise building in Limbang, there is a Malay kampung or village. The houses are all single storey buildings built of wood and are on stilts above the river.
We gave the students a lot of free time today, most of which they spent shopping, emailing or in the amusement arcade. Pizza Hut made a change from rice at lunchtime, although we went to a Chinese restaurant for dinner.
We thought one of the boys was planning some mischief for the evening so we read the group the riot act, so to speak.
