On day two we will fly on a small twin-engined otter to Lukla in the Khumbu region..
From Lukla we trek to Phakding, where we will stay in our first Tea House. It will be an easy day ...
It is a 45 minute flight to Lukla, the airstrip built by Sir Edmund Hillary as part of his efforts to help the Sherpa people by building schools and hospitals in the region. It is a spectacular flight.
In Lukla we will meet our sherpas. They will carry the bulk of our equipment. Even so, at the altitude you will be walking at, even your light bag will feel heavy!
The first day's walk is short and mainly down hill. We follow the course of a river, white with glacial melt waters, through fields of corn, buckwheat and potatoes. At this altitude (less than 3000 m) there are still trees. The views of the mountains is splendid.
At this point we will be taking things slowly, pacing ourselves and acclimatizing (getting used to the effects of altitude).
Along the route you might see "mani" walls. These are walls of carved stone tablets with the inscription "Om mani padme hum", a Buddhist mantra or chant. It means "Hail to the jewel in the lotus".
On this trek you will learn a great deal about the local culture and history of Nepal and its people.
