The Elements of Art

Line is a continuous mark made on a paper.  There are curved, dashed, horizontal, bold, and curly lines just to name a few.

Shapes are formed when lines meet and are flat. There are geometric shapes and organic or irregular shapes.

Value refers to lightness or darkness. The grey scale shows all values from white to black. You can get different values of a colour by mixing its shades and tints.  To get a shade, you mix black with the colour. To get a tint, you mix white with the colour.

Texture is the way something feels when you touch it. Artists create the illusion of texture in artworks through the use of line.

Space is the emptiness in or around a piece of art. Space can be negative and/or positive.

Colour or hue is the most complex element of art. Intensity, brightness, cool/warm, complementary and primary are just some of the factors involved with colour.
