Year 6 Autumn Term Overview

Literacy

Fiction: Writing in the horror and adventure genres.
Play scripts

Non-Fiction: Non-chronological reports. Autobiographies
and Biographies. Journalism.

Grammar: Nouns, verbs, adjectives. Active and Passive
sentences. Connectives and complex sentences.

General sentence structure, spelling, handwriting and reading will continue throughout the year.

Science

Interdependence and Adaptation – habitats, life cycles, food chains, how animals have adapted to meet the environment in which they live.
Micro Organisms – healthy habits, vaccinations, good uses, decay.

Numeracy

Four rules revision: Addition, Subtraction, Multiplication
and Division.

Negative numbers, rounding and ordering decimals, using brackets, square and prime numbers, factors, properties of shape, measurement, collecting data, perimeter, area, fractions.

Music

Exploring rounds - Sing rounds and identify how the parts fit together.

Reading, playing & performing - Find given notes on a wide range of instruments.

Compose pieces and songs using a range of structures and styles.

Humanities

Life after the end of the second World War. Research the 1950’s and 60’s. Concentrate on housing, transport, music, fashion, employment and world affairs. Account for why changes took place in these decades.

Research about the five inhabited continents of the world. Focus on major cities, key landmarks, climate, industry and population.

Microsoft PowerPoint – use of animation, format background, design of slides, text; to produce an effective presentation with a minimum of ten slides.

Animations – use specialist software to create a simple series of animations.
