Key Stage 1 overview

At Dhahran British Grammar school Key Stage 1 includes Year 1 and Year 2, five to seven year-old children. We have two parallel classes in each year group and share a building with the Foundation Stage (pre-reception and reception). This is brightly decorated and our central corridor show-cases creative work from each class. Young children have access to a variety of themed play areas that reflect the learning they are engaged with in class. We have a variety of wonderful P.E. facilities as well as a soft play room, containing a bouncy castle, ball pool, a range of climbing apparatus and construction equipment to encourage children to invent their own apparatus. Within the early years building we have a music room, kitchen and Computer room, dedicated to meet the needs of our young children. Outside we have a large shaded sand area with climbing frames, swings and slides. There is a newly built garage that houses bikes and wheeled toys that the children ride around a tarmac track. This offers children the opportunity to develop the all-important road-safety skills.

Year One and Year 2 follow the English National Curriculum for Key Stage One, which provides opportunities to develop a broad range of understanding, knowledge and skills. Each class has a teaching assistant in addition to the teacher. Children are class based for the majority of their lessons, but we have specialist teachers for Music and P.E. Each week the children have a library lesson in our Learning Resource Centre with the librarian, where they learn library skills and check out a book to read at home. Year 2 children have a weekly Arabic lesson where they learn about Saudi Arabian culture and customs as a few words of Arabic! Children in Year 2 currently take the Key Stage One SATs tests in Reading, Writing and Mathematics.
