Much of the last school year was devoted to the Council of International Schools accreditation process. This work still continues but we are already finding other opportunities for professional development.
The new year began with five teacher work days. Much time was devoted to the CIS process and, of course, to setting up classrooms. However, time was found for two other presentations. One was on the benefits of circle time and the other was feedback from a course that two teachers attended before the summer break in Dubai on the Renewed Framework for Literacy.
We have a busy term ahead of us with preparations for the CIS team visit in November but we will be finding time for more in-house sessions on subjects such as ‘Exploring the cultural and natural beauty of the Middle East’, more on the ‘Renewed Framework for Literacy’ and ‘Creativity in Maths’. Many of the teachers in the Early Years Foundation Stage and Key Stage One are active members of a group called Teachers of Young Children (TOYC). Our Special Educational Needs Co-ordinator will be attending a conference in Dubai. The IGCSE Maths teachers are also going to Dubai for further training. Six staff will be participating in on-line courses in preparation for the changes in the IGCSE syllabus that will come into play in 2009.
As if all that is not enough, seven staff have embarked on a Masters Degree with Buffalo State University, New York.
Next term will be a busy time with The Arabian Reading Association (TARA) conference in Bahrain, the annual TOYC conference and the joint International Schools Group conference.
