First Council Meeting - Minutes by Sanjana Kumar

Urgent Issues

1.     New Locker; Need lockers preferably inside- for the year 10s and 11s maybe in the back room of the common room.
2.     Bathrooms; the soap does not smell nice?! DT area does not have any close by bathrooms (other than the American toilets near the mini theatre which students are prohibited for use)
3.     Water cooler in the ICT lab
4.     Halloween Dance; main problems with school dances is the fact that there are not many “partiers” so to increase the population invite DHS. Also due to the split in age groups (generally older) pupils do not attend dances- so the solution put forward was to put on 2 dances- one for KS3 and one for KS4 (including DHS).
5.     Non School Uniform; these days should come annually (e.g. once every term) and each time, the money raised should be used for different charities (even local charities such as Orphanages with in Saudi Arabia-the money raised would have a greater impact on them because riyals do not have to be exchanged into pounds which makes the money seem “less worth it”.
6.     More After School Activities (ASAs); more choices should be offered to children – so far the ASAs are restricted! Plus a lot more encouragement is needed to persuade more pupils to join ASAs- maybe link the participation in ASA with the merit system- year 11s agree that it’s very difficult for them to receive merits, so by their participation in ASA this could encourage them to become whole rounded students.
7.     Snow Cones for DBGS; the American side sell snow cones during 2nd break and sometimes disallow DBGS students to buy their products. DBGS students should be able to buy snow cones from the cafeteria (especially in the heat!)
8.     More Activities; Increase in school activities e.g. WOW! Week and Dodge ball Tournaments between pupils and staff…
9.     Cafeteria Food; the portions have become smaller and there’s not enough variety, and the Hot Meal is repetitive
10.  Waiting inside classes; during the summer months it’s too hot for students to stand outside waiting for teachers- consider the possibility of allowing students to wait inside the classrooms?
